Sahel season is here and between beach breezes and salty air, your beach home needs a little extra TLC. This guide will help you keep your furniture looking fresh and lasting longer through the summer with only a few simple hacks. Let's dive in!
Some materials just aren’t made for Sahel...
Go for: teak, aluminum, outdoor-treated fabrics, powder-coated metal, etc.
Avoid: untreated wood, velvet, suede, etc. Generally any materials that trap moisture and sand are a no-go.
Salt particles in the air cling to surfaces and can cause corrosion or fading over time so here are a few things you can do to address that:
Wipe down metal and wood surfaces weekly with a damp microfiber cloth.
Use a mild vinegar-water mix to break down salt residue naturally (1 part white vinegar & 3 parts water in a spray bottle to lightly mist on a cloth then wipe). Just remember to test it out on a small spot first.
For wood, finish with a protective oil or sealant every season.
Sand finds its way into pretty much...everything. So:
Shake out cushions weekly, or invest in zippered cushion protectors.
Consider low-pile rugs or indoor/outdoor carpets. Basically anything short and flat (kilim and jute rugs are great options!). They’re easier to clean than more plush or fluffy textures.
Make sure you don't suffocate your furniture when you're back in Cairo for the week.
Leave airflow between large furniture pieces and walls.
Leave wardrobe & cabinet doors slightly open, especially wood ones. This will help prevent mustiness and warped wood from trapped moisture.
AVOID plastic wrap, it traps moisture and causes mold. Opt for breathable dust covers made out of cotton or linen, for example.
So...we can say that with just a little attention, your summer home can stay just as fresh as a breezy beach day!
